Do you need to know the context of this photograph for it to be interesting? The weeds and the combination of articles make it feel intimate to me, even though I was standing along the fairly well traveled Sierra Highway (north of Vasquez Canyon Road).
Dara Folsom was 18. This is a fairly straight stretch of Sierra Highway. I wonder what happened.
I found a photo of Dara on a myspace page by Googling her name. There's a boy in the photo with her, and they look happy. The boy's name on the file isn't Andrew, whose last name is illegible on the second marker. The young woman who posted the photograph has graduated from high school and moved south.
You can't see it here, but the earth between the road and these memorials was bulldozed fairly recently, and there's a battered license plate still in the frame nearby. Seems possible that it has been there these past 2 1/2 years and was recently uncovered by the bulldozing.

I love these pictures.
I drive by a bunch of these little shrines in my travels around L.A. There are two of them in my old neighborhood, Pacific Palisades, that I am familiar with because I know about the related accidents.
I travel through Topanga Canyon fairly often and see a couple of these. One is fairly permanent looking, a cross fashioned out of white wrought iron pieces. I've never stopped to look at it.
There's an amazing one for a couple of children who died in the late 1800s on the road between Panamint Springs and Lone Pine, and it's amazingly been kept up all this time. So lonely and amazing.
This thing of continuing to take a photo every day has gotten me to look more closely at things in search of subjects. There's a place very near here where I took photos of some old water towers, and they were just torn down about a week ago for some new houses.
I love Sierra Highway.

That's really something to see a roadside shrine from the 1800's. I wonder who keeps it up...and wouldn't that make an interesting story?
This is my friends memorial. It has been almost 4 years now. She was killed with her friend by a drunk driver.

I knew a guy who died in a car accident in high school, and though we weren't close, I sometimes think about everything he has missed.

very wired putting my sisters name in google and finding this site...Its a great page...she was killed by a drunk driver..but it just wasn't the other driver and dara wasnt driving.

Wow I just googled my best friends name and I happened to stumble across this. It was a horrible tradgedy and she has a lot of people who care for her. We lost an incredibly good person that day. All beacuse of a drunk driver.....
