I don't know if you see these little roadside shrines in other parts of the country. I don't think I saw them till I moved to Southern California.
They mark the places where people died in accidents.
This one is particularly large and well-built, on a cross made of square metal poles. Some friends used the marker to write messages.
Others wrote in a metal and rubber bound notebook.

We have them in the east along roads. Not so many in the midwest, but I've even see a few there
Sundry: These images are really great, even though the circumstances are tragic. There's one in my neighborhood I'll try to capture and show you, although it's nowhere near this arresting.
We have them in Indiana, although not nearly as diverse or creative. It seems to be a universal need to recognize the missed loved ones and the unfortunate place of their loss.
I have lived in 9 different states and they have been, to some degree, present in each one.

I just got back from Greece and there they have little shrines built at these tragic places. Some with burning candles inside.
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention!
themoontopples: I'd love to see your photos of the marker.
I saw two or three more along my route home and I think I'm going to stop and take a closer (photographic) look. I had several images from this day that I liked and didn't post. Almost didn't take the one of the notebook, which I was holding open with my left hand...but I ended up liking it a lot.
