Budgies of the Serengeti - Thursday 5/21/2009

Yeah, we get a kick out of our three little guys grazing in the carpet.

That's Nick in the yellow, Gus on the upper right, and Rocky down front with one of his best friends: one of those little lattice balls with a bell inside of it. He plays with them endlessly.

Rocky has a very rich inner life.

Show Me the Tater! - Thursday 3/12/2009

There has been a lot of chatter on Facebook today about the impending arrival of a batch of corned beef and cabbage. The raw materials arrived today, but it takes a long time to cook this dish, so we were thwarted in our attempts to have it for dinner.

(It has been started, as you can see, in the big yellow stock pot in the background.)

Dodger's determined to get to the bottom of this.

Where is the potato he has been promised? Huh?

If you'd like to be Dodger's friend, he's on Facebook as Artful Dodger. Is it wise to name your pets after scruffy, pick-pocketing street urchins?

Step Away from the Treat - Thursday 2/19/2009

Really.

This popcorn heart does not remotely concern you.

Restoration Photograph - Thursday 2/12/2009

Started playing around with my scanner and software this evening. This shows just the preliminary difference between the original faded photo and the partially restored one.

I can clean up that border, for instance. This is my brother The Brain, his new car, and our dog Ginger.

Ginger. She was seriously one of my best friends growing up. When we swam out into the lake, she'd eventually get upset about us being so far away and swim out to us.

I used to ride around on my Huffy dirt bike with her on my lap. She listened to everything I had to say. She slept with me at night (sorry, Mom.)

I still get choked up seeing her picture. She was a great friend.

Just had to throw in this idyllic shot of chubby baby me. Cue "Blue Skies!"

After the Rain - Monday 2/9/2009

I am pretty sure that I had a clear idea of why I wanted to take a photo of my coffee when I was doing it, but I can't for the life of me imagine why now.

As I was taking this shot outside the Studio City branch of the LAPL, a guy waiting for the light on Laurel Canyon hollered out, "Don't for get to take it off!"

Not so many years ago I would have assumed this was a double--or maybe even a single--entendre.

Today I recognized it for the simple kindness it was, a nice man not wanting me to forget the cup until I heard it crack on the pavement behind me. I waved and nodded, and stopped myself from saying, "I'm actually pretty focused on it."

Ha ha.

The Facebook Photography Contest this week was "Skyline." It was a gorgeous day for it, the rain and hail having scrubbed the air. I pulled off of Laurel Canyon and drove up Selma Avenue into the Hollywood Hills to get this obstructed view. Too late to enter the contest, but here you are.

It's writing group night! Yay!

Clearly the animals at Braveheart's house are deeply unnerved by my presence.

In my experience, domesticated animals have an uncanny memories when it comes to people with the right length of fingernails who are willing to use them on haunches and bellies.

Beauty Shot - Saturday 2/7/2009

Just the handsomest, smartest parrot on the planet. And he's feeling it today.

Since joining 24 Hour Fitness, I don't work out with DVDs at home very much. But the other night I wanted to get home before the rain, so I fell back on The Firm : Time Crunch. (45 minutes of aerobics and weights.)

As soon as I put the disc in the player, this little guy--who was sitting on top of his cage in the bedroom--starts up with the sound effects, "oof," "umph," "erghhh."

Hey, I don't sound like that!

When he got bored and started exploring the bed and nightstand behind me, I put him in his "house."

As I'm working through my crunches I hear, in a most plaintive voice, "I love you soooo good."

Unlike how I love him. Which is clearly deficient if I am willing to let him sit in his cage at all when I'm home.

I remember having pets that couldn't talk. I always assumed they admired me.

Dream Big, Little Man - Sunday 8/17/2008

Rocky chats up the metal hen in the living room.

You go, boy.

Jimmy Helps Make the Bed - Tuesday 3/25/2008

When I return from my morning ablutions, there's Braveheart's darling, giving me the Kitty Power Glare. "You will rub my belly. You will call in late and you will stay and you will ruuuuuuub my belly."

Momentarily distracted by the usual belly-rub suppliers rustling in their sleep.

Okay. Back to me and my belly.

Oof. That was good.

Why are you still here?

And now for a little more on meeting Los Angelista yesterday. I just wanted to offer her anonymity if she wanted it. Are those of you who have been dragged into my blog with nicknames you had no control over wondering why she gets this option? Braveheart? Tomasina? Hydra? Bells?

I dunno, it just felt like the thing to do at the time.

Anyway, she wrote about it on her blog quite cleverly and I thought I'd share a little more too. On my blog. Because she deals with really important things over there. I have to say that Los Angelista has spurred me to write things in response to her posts that are more challenging and make me think about the world and myself in it more than the stuff I tend to post here. She's already been a good influence on me.

It was great. I was more worried that I wouldn't measure up than that she wouldn't. Although there was that IM conversation with Toronto in which I joked that we were meeting on a trail in the middle of Griffith Park and she said next to a shallow grave in the Angeles National Forest might also be appropriate. Then she said she'd come to my funeral. Aren't my friends sweet!? I think I'd draw a nice crowd. Just watch out for the e-vile blog lurkers... ;)

I have met people from the Internet since the days of the BBS Boards when all we had were words made of green or amber light to connect us. (Got that campfire feeling yet, kiddies?)

I think the first person we met was from rec.pets.birds. She worked at Sea World and took us into the lab behind the penguin house where we met and petted penguin #154. A high-water mark in this bird-fan's life, let me tell you! That was the late 80s.

I met a woman from a Ralph Fiennes fan list a couple of times. We were the ones who told ourselves we were on the list because of the high quality of his films, rather than the high quality of his face. We talked about all kinds of movies, etc. when we met and then she transferred to England to work. Hmm, I never put that together before, but she didn't seem like the stalker type....

People from that same fan list got together to see the premiere of The Avengers in Westwood. I don't know whether it was that the film was so laughably awful or that one of the women at dinner afterward showed off a People or Us magazine article about her being Ralph Fiennes' Biggest Fan (complete with photographs of her in the middle of a room stuffed with memorabilia) but I dropped off the list shortly after. Perhaps it was the sense that this was the shape of things to come!

I've met a couple of other random folks, one of whom seemed a little odd online and turned out to be a little odd in person, but not dangerous.

Last May, a person I met on 43Things hosted Hydra, my mom and I overnight in her home in LaHavre! It was the most amazing thing for her to do for us. A terrific first night in France that will never be forgotten. Sitting up late at her kitchen table, drinking wine after dinner and talking politics with her and her husband.

I think we all have pretty good instincts about each other and that you can't hide long-term, even online, if you write about what is important to you. None of the meet-ups were with people who I'd only exchanged a few lines with.

Another good experience chalked up, thanks to Los Angelista. And an introduction to the Casbah Cafe, too!

It's My Bird in a Box - Sunday 1/20/2008

Well, actually, it's my bird emerging from a box.

He was completely inside this Kleenex box on the kitchen counter with just his tail feathers peeking out and he didn't want to leave it when I wanted to go to the living room. So I carried him out here crouched inside.

As soon as I found my camera, he came out like Godzilla rising from the sewers of Tokyo.

Nick's IN! - Wednesday 1/2/2008

After posting notices in the area, running a Found ad in the local paper for three weeks and crossing our fingers, we've decided Nick's a part of the flock. We found a very good deal on a good sized cage and he seems really happy with us.

Here's the new line-up. Gus, Rocky and Nick.

Nick has integrated amazingly well. In fact, there seems to be less squabbling in general now that he's here. Rocky and Gus, to be honest, spent a lot of their time stepping on each other's tails before Nick arrived. (This is a no-no in budgiedom.)

Nick's a puzzle. We're still surprised someone didn't claim him, because he has obviously spent time with people and is finger tame. He's learning to accept being kissed on the belly (Rocky echoed my kiss noise this morning!), which is just one of the costs of living here.

He seems to really appreciate the fresh lettuce or parsley they get every night along with cooked grains, veggies and fruits. Keeps looking at the other birds and us like, "Oh, you don't know how good you've had it."

(Thanks for asking, Deb in FW!)

Anniversary Meadowlarks - Saturday 12/15/2007

How cool is this!? We haven't seen meadowlarks in our back yard since the first year we were here.

Today Hydra called me to the kitchen window to see the five big guys (bigger than a dove) in the back yard! It is, coincidentally, the 7th anniversary of the day we moved in here.

Boy, am I glad that we aren't doing all that lifting and loading today!

Our real estate agent came to our housewarming party and saw them, and said, "I want meadowlarks! How can I get meadowlarks?" I still don't know. Maybe it's the cracked corn.

Acton's middle school is named Meadowlark. Kind of nice, huh? Especially since the high school is named after "one of California's most notorious bandits," Tiburcio Vasquez.

Meanwhile, indoors: The Triple Budgie Experience. We decided to let Nick (green, top) out to hang with the boys this morning. He's pretty mellow and doesn't seem to be causing any scuffles. Yet.

Rocky, bottom right, remains the physically largest, but that doesn't seem to intimidate little Gus at all.

Our found ad will appear in the Acton/Agua Dulce Country Journal today and run for three weeks.

Jimmy Gets Some Lovin' - Monday 12/13/2007

Braveheart and Jimmy on the couch after the writing group meeting. Jimmy's a happy cat.

Lulu (the Doc's dog) requests equal time. There's enough for everyone.
